Ray Charles

Ray Charles is, without a doubt, one of the most well known and iconic performers the world of music has ever known.  His distinctive voice and legendary music have influenced countless musicians and entertained generations.  Enjoy CT Live remembers this jazz great today!

Ray CharlesBorn in Albany, Georgia in 1930, Ray Charles Robinson gradually became blind by the age of seven.  His parents insisted he help with chores and learn to be self-sufficient.  Ray Charles lost his parents early in life and was an orphan by the age of 15.  In spite of living in the South as a blind, orphaned, African American, Ray continued to strive and work for the life he wanted.  He completed his education at Florida’s State School for the Deaf and Blind.  He later moved to Seattle, Washington, where he recorded his first record.

Ray Charles youngOver the course of his incredible music career, Ray Charles won seventeen Grammys, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the President’s Merit Award, and Playboy Awards, plus many others.  He’s been recognized the world over and is considered one of the top musicians of all time.
