The UMOJA Music Series

The UMOJA Music Series is a seven-week concert series hosted by founders of the Hartford-based band, UMOJA.  Alto Saxophonist Yunie Mojica and Trombonist Raynel Frazier initially hosted the UMOJA Music Series with the single goal of bringing together the community with creative concerts that represent the seven principals of Kwanzaa.

Umoja, or “unity” in Swahili is the first principal in Kwanzaa.  Yunie Mojica and Raynel Frazier bonded through musical friendship, and eventually began creating original jazz compositions under the name UMOJA.  Drawing influence from Africa, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, UMOJA pays homage to a rich triage of culture and diversity.  Since their first collaboration in 2007, Mojica and Frazier have continued to collaborate, adding five more musicians to UMOJA.
