Michael Coppola grew up in Fairfield, CT, and has lived in Shelton for the past 25 years. Mainly a jazz musician, he also plays classical and classic rock as fingerstyle instrumentals and Chet Atkins style. He started performing with rock bands at the age of 14 and had his first solo gig in Boson when he was 18 years old. You can catch a performance every Sunday at Rainbow Gardens on the green in Milford from 5-7 p.m.
What about playing music makes you happy?
I love to improvise.
What are your hopes for your future in live music?
I enjoy playing live in almost any type of venue: Concert, club, even restaurant or hospital. I just hope to continue playing live.
What other acts/musicians do you regularly play with?
I do a lot of duos with my 15 year old daughter Michaela (who is creating quite a stir in the CT jazz guitar scene), and also with vocalist Nicole Pasternak, Dana Degenaro, Michael Dunham, Amanda Belitto
What has been your favorite performance so far?
I loved playing the Montreal Jazz Festival last year, also the Blue Note in NYC this year. I always enjoy playing at the Chet Atkins Festival in Nashville.
Who are some of your favorite musicians?
Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Art Tatum…so many!
What is your favorite instrument to play? Why?
I play only 9 string guitars, which are my own concept. I have several, all made by Jim DeCava, with the exception of my latest made by DGN Guitars.
